The short answer

On September 10, 2026, Amazon Ads announced a partnership with OpenAI to place ads in ChatGPT. For now, ChatGPT Ads are a pilot for select US advertisers, bought through Amazon DSP as a managed service. Most sellers cannot buy them yet, and there is no self-serve.

But three AI ad lanes are already open to you today, and on this surface the gates have a habit of falling fast. Here is the full picture, seller lens first.

What did Amazon and OpenAI announce on September 10, 2026?

Amazon Ads announced an integration with OpenAI that lets select US advertisers extend campaigns they already run with Amazon into a conversational ad experience inside ChatGPT. Amazon calls the placement ChatGPT Ads. It is a pilot, invitation-level, and Amazon’s team sets up and optimizes the campaigns as a managed service.

The route matters: this runs through Amazon DSP, not Sponsored Products. The announcement’s spokesperson is Chris Conetta, Director of Omnichannel Supply at Amazon DSP, who called conversational ads “the fastest growing engagement opportunity” for brands, and the post’s call to action points at the DSP product page, not the seller ad console.

Mechanically, the ads appear as designated text or image units beneath ChatGPT responses. Amazon manages the campaigns using its shopping and audience data, while OpenAI controls when and where ads show up. Amazon frames the placement at the consideration and decision stage: reaching people while they explore options and compare choices in a conversation.

The first named tester is Delta Vacations. That fits the surface: travel is one of the fastest-growing ChatGPT ad verticals per Sensor Tower, alongside financial services, software, and health and wellness. Product sellers are not the first wave, which is itself a signal about who this pilot is currently for.

The bigger story is the reversal. Amazon spent 2025 restricting AI platforms like ChatGPT from its store data. As of September 2026 it is funneling its own advertisers into the largest chatbot on earth, a surface with roughly 900M weekly active users as of early 2026.

Can Amazon sellers buy ChatGPT ads today?

No, not for most sellers, and it is worth being precise about why. As of September 2026 the pilot is limited to select US advertisers, it is bought through Amazon DSP as a managed service, there is no self-serve path, no published rate card, and no disclosed measurement mechanics for the ChatGPT surface.

The practical gate is DSP itself. Amazon’s managed DSP service typically starts around $50K per month in spend. Self-service DSP no longer has an Amazon-imposed minimum (that was removed in late 2025), but in practice roughly $10K to $15K a month is the floor where the system has enough conversion signal to optimize. Even then, self-service DSP access does not put you in the ChatGPT pilot; it puts you in the pool the pilot will most likely expand into.

If your monthly ad budget is in the hundreds or low thousands, this is not your lane yet. That is not bad news, because three conversational-ad lanes are already open, and one of them is free.

Where can Amazon sellers show up in AI conversations right now?

The question the announcement raises for a working seller is not “how do I buy ChatGPT ads.” It is “where can my products appear when a shopper asks an AI what to buy.” As of September 2026 there are four lanes, and three of them are open today.

LaneWhat it isWho can buy itCost basisStatus + first move
AI-assistant optimization Making your listing the answer Amazon’s shopping assistant (and external bots) quote: structured attributes, use cases, plain-language Q&As Every seller Free (your time) Live now. Audit your hero listings for AI readability this week.
Sponsored Prompts Paid placements inside the AI shopping prompts in Amazon’s own assistant experience Any seller in the Amazon ad console CPC, billable since Mar 25, 2026 Live, general availability. Test with a slice of your Sponsored Products budget.
Alexa+ conversational ads Conversational entertainment ad formats inside Alexa+ interactions Self-serve since Jun 17, 2026 Self-serve campaign buy Live. Most relevant for household and consumable brands.
ChatGPT Ads via Amazon DSP Amazon DSP campaigns extended into text and image units under ChatGPT responses Select US advertisers, invitation pilot, managed service Not published (managed DSP context: ~$50K/mo) Pilot. Get DSP-ready and watch for expansion; no self-serve yet.

Lane one is the foundation and it is free. Amazon says more than 300M customers used its AI shopping assistant in 2025, and since May 13, 2026 that assistant lives in the main search experience as Alexa for Shopping. If your listing reads like a spec sheet, the assistant has nothing quotable. Our AI shopping assistant optimization guide covers the exact rewrite, and the owned-versus-rented logic behind leading with organic is the same one we walk through in Amazon PPC vs SEO.

Lane two is the paid version of the same surface. Sponsored Prompts went from free beta to billable CPC general availability on March 25, 2026, and they are bought in the same console as your existing campaigns. Our 2026 ad formats guide covers where they appear and how to budget the test.

Lane four, the new one, is a watch-and-prepare lane. The sellers who get early access when the pilot widens will be the ones already spending through DSP, directly or through an agency seat. That is how every Amazon beta has rolled out, and there is no reason to expect this one to be different.

Why the AI lanes are worth real budget

12.9x peak ROAS on a $2,000+ AOV product

Conversational surfaces reward the same thing search does: a listing and funnel that convert. Running advertising and listings together, we took a smart irrigation brand to a 12.9x peak ROAS, and an organic iced tea brand past $100K a month with roughly 10% TACoS because 60%+ of its sales are organic. That organic share is exactly what AI assistants feed on.

How fast could ChatGPT Ads open up to regular sellers?

Nobody outside Amazon and OpenAI knows, so treat any date you read as a guess. What you can do is look at how fast the gates fell on the two closest precedents, because both companies have already shown their pattern.

OpenAI’s own ad gates collapsed in about 90 days. ChatGPT ads launched February 9, 2026 with a $200K to $250K campaign minimum at a $60 CPM. By April 13 there was a self-serve ads manager with the minimum down to $50K and CPMs from $25. By early May, some buyers had CPC bidding and near-zero minimums. Revenue followed: $100M annualized by late March, past $1B by September 1.

The gates fall fast: ChatGPT ad pricing, Feb to May 2026

Campaign minimum $200K Feb 9 $50K Apr 13 ~$0 early May Price per thousand (CPM) $60 Feb 9 $25 Apr 13 CPC early May About 90 days from a $200K walled garden to CPC bidding with near-zero minimums (ppc.land timeline).

Amazon’s closest precedent moved just as fast. Sponsored Prompts went from free beta in November 2025 to billable, generally available CPC inventory on March 25, 2026, roughly four months. When Amazon finds a conversational surface that performs, it productizes it for the whole seller base quickly, because that is where the volume is.

ChatGPT ads: annualized revenue run rate, 2026

The revenue curve that pulled Amazon to the table.

$1B$500M$0 Feb 9: launch Mar 26: $100M, 600+ advertisers Sep 1: $1B run rate Annualized run rate per Sensor Tower estimates; curve interpolated between reported points.

Read the pattern, not a promise. Amazon’s ad business passed $70B in trailing-twelve-month revenue in early 2026, and growth at that size requires new surfaces. A pilot that extends existing DSP campaigns into 900M weekly ChatGPT users is exactly the kind of surface that gets widened once measurement holds up. Prepare like the seller-accessible version arrives sooner than the cautious take expects.

How big is chatbot advertising really in 2026?

Here is the sober counterweight, and it belongs in your planning. EMARKETER projects standalone chatbot advertising at under $1B in US spend for 2026, rising to only around $5B by 2030, with more than 80% of AI-related ad spend running next to AI content rather than inside chatbot conversations. Against $70B+ of Amazon ad revenue, this surface is a rounding error today.

Attribution is the other open question. OpenAI added a conversions API and a pixel during its pilot year, but Amazon has not disclosed how its closed-loop measurement translates to a surface it does not own. Until sellers can see conversion paths, budget shifted here is faith, not math.

So the honest posture is preparation without reallocation: keep your core Sponsored Products and DSP engines running, put a test-sized slice into the open conversational lanes, and make your organic AI presence, the free lane, excellent. If the pilot opens up in 2027 and the numbers hold, you move fast from a standing start.

What should Amazon sellers do this quarter?

1. Make your listings quotable to AI. Structured attributes filled out completely, use-case language a bot can lift, plain-language Q&As, and context the assistant’s intent model can map. This is the highest-leverage free work on Amazon right now; the step-by-step is here.

2. Test Sponsored Prompts while ChatGPT Ads stays gated. It is live, CPC, and in your existing console. A 5 to 10% budget slice tells you what conversational placements do for your catalog months before the ChatGPT surface reaches you.

3. Get DSP-ready if your scale justifies it. The ChatGPT pilot runs through Amazon DSP, so a DSP relationship, direct or through an agency, is the on-ramp. Managed service starts around $50K a month; self-service has no Amazon minimum but needs roughly $10K to $15K monthly to optimize. If that is out of range solo, it is one of the things a full-service Amazon agency brings to smaller brands through its own seat.

4. Measure AI referrals now. Set up GA4 to segment traffic from chatgpt.com, Perplexity, and Gemini referrers. We already see AI referral traffic in client accounts, and you cannot judge next year’s channel without this year’s baseline.

One budgeting note: whatever you allocate to conversational tests this quarter competes with Q4’s rising cost floor. Peak fulfillment fees run October 15 to January 14, and our Q4 peak fees breakdown shows what that does to per-unit margin while you plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I advertise my Amazon products in ChatGPT?
Not yet, for most sellers. ChatGPT Ads are a pilot for select US advertisers, bought through Amazon DSP as a managed service, with no self-serve option as of September 2026. What you can do today: optimize listings for AI assistants, run Sponsored Prompts in the ad console, and get DSP-ready so you are in the pool the pilot expands into.
How do ChatGPT Ads work with Amazon?
Advertisers extend campaigns they already run with Amazon into ChatGPT through Amazon DSP. Ads appear as designated text or image units beneath ChatGPT responses. Amazon manages the campaigns using its shopping and audience data, while OpenAI controls when and where the ads appear in conversations.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost in 2026?
Amazon has not published pricing for the ChatGPT Ads pilot; it is a managed DSP buy, and managed DSP typically starts around $50K a month. On OpenAI’s own side, pricing compressed fast in 2026: from a $200K to $250K minimum at a $60 CPM in February to a $50K minimum and $25 CPMs by April, then CPC bidding with near-zero minimums for some buyers by May.
What is the difference between Sponsored Prompts and ChatGPT Ads?
Sponsored Prompts are paid placements inside Amazon’s own AI shopping assistant, open to any seller in the ad console and billable on a CPC basis since March 25, 2026. ChatGPT Ads place Amazon DSP campaigns on OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a surface Amazon does not own, and are limited to select US advertisers in a managed pilot.
Should sellers budget for chatbot advertising in 2026?
Keep it a test-sized slice. EMARKETER projects US chatbot advertising at under $1B in 2026, and attribution on the ChatGPT surface is still unproven. The preparation that pays now is free or cheap: AI-readable listings, a Sponsored Prompts test, GA4 tracking of AI referrals, and DSP readiness if your scale supports it.
